Prepping Supplies for Baby

In a previous post I discussed emergency preparedness for pets. Another unique situation that must be addressed is infants. Those under the age of 3 or 4 have special needs that should not be forgotten. Here are prepping supplies for baby to include in your emergency stores.

Sanitation

This category doesn’t require much explanation. You should have baby wipes, lotion, shampoo and body wash in your infant kit. They have sensitive skin. That won’t change in the event of an emergency. You should also include wash rags, though you will likely already have those in your standard supplies.

Baby First Aid

This is another set of goods that are unique to little ones. In addition to the sunblock and hand sanitizer in your standard doomsday prepping checklist, you should also pack infant ibuprofen. This is a commonly overlooked item.

Clothes

This is a given. Have a few days’ worth of clothes packed in case of an emergency. One great item to include is a sleeper sack. This will allow for easy layering of clothing in cooler weather. Remember to update your baby’s emergency kit every 6 months to current sizes.

Diapers

This is another no-brainer if your child is still in diapers. Always have a case or two handy to get you through a disaster event as long as possible. These should be stored in a waterproof container or Ziploc bags to keep them dry. To be on the safe side, go ahead and throw in some cloth diapers just in case. This is another set of items that should be kept accessible so they can be updated to the latest size easily.

Food

Even if you are breastfeeding, you should have formula on hand. Stress can impact milk production. Therefore, you should pack bottles, powdered formula, bowls with lids, baby spoons, baby cereal and a case or two of baby food depending on your child’s age.

Entertainment

Don’t forget to include books and toys to keep your infant or toddler busy.

All of these items can be kept in a duffel bag for easy grabbing. Tag it with a luggage tag that includes your name, address and contact information.

Don’t be selfish with your prepping supplies for baby. These DIY kits make great shower or newborn gifts!
